In 1954, brothers John and Leonard Schemper purchased Den Dulk Hardware. Den
Dulk Hardware was located at 121 W Main St. in Ripon, a site now occupied by the
Swier Tire Company. The Schemper brothers occupied this location until 1962 when
they purchased property at 336 W Main St. from the Kamps family. The building
was remodeled and Schemper's moved in later that year. In 1969, John sold his
interests in the business to Leonard, but he continued to work for him on a part
time basis.
On January 1, 1976, Leonard sold the company and the property to
his son Ward who then began to run the business. Big changes took
place over the next several years. In 1977, Schemper's joined Ace
Hardware, a move that proved to be wise. The company incorporated in
1978 and became the Schemper Corporation doing business as
Schemper's Hardware. More change occurred from 1979 to 1980, as the
corporation purchased an adjacent property and constructed a
warehouse upon it. This allowed the sales floor to be expanded to
5700 square feet, a 54% increase.
 The
80s proved to be a big growth period as the company saw double digit increases
annually. 1981 marked the beginning of computerization and the company was
running 100% computerized POS, automatic replenishment, payroll, and G&L by the
end of the year. In 1989, Ward and Bud Schemper, grandson of cofounder John,
purchased what was the Mar Val Grocery Store located at 333 W Main St. An
extensive remodeling project ensued and the business relocated to the property
in January 1990. Nearly five years later, in November 1994, Ward and Bud opened
Newman Ace Hardware, a 7000 square foot store located in Newman, CA.
In
January of 2003 Schemper's
completed the purchase of
Patterson Ace Hardware in
Patterson, California, this
being their 3rd
store. In 2005 Schemper's
moved their Ripon store to the
current location in the Main
Street Plaza Center at the
corner of Wilma and Main Street
in Ripon. This new
facility allowed them to almost
double their space and inventory
offering to the community.
