CALCUTTA POLES

Calcutta Poles are not a new item to Schemper’s Ace Hardware, we have sold them for many years, but they are unique and not a lot of people know we have them.

These are “genuine Indian Calcutta poles” more commonly known as “calcutta poles”. They are used in different regions of the country for different uses and in different industries. In the central valley of California they are used for knocking almonds and pecans. After the trees are hand or machine knocked workers go through with the poles and knock the remaining nuts out of the trees. They also use them in the winter to clean “mummies” out of the trees. Calcutta’s are used in the fishing industry in California and the northwest for harvesting crab and as rigging poles on commercial fishing boats. In the southern United States they make fishing poles out of calcutta’s, I have heard that there is nothing like catching certain species of fish on a calcutta pole.

What makes these poles unique and different from regular bamboo is their strength and durability. They are semi-solid not hollow, with a very light weight tight fiber composition. Their joints are tighter or closer together than most bamboo and their darker color signifies that they come from a certain region in Southeast Asia. This species of poles are grown elsewhere in the world but Southeast Asia is the only place where they are grown that they come out with the durability and straightness that calcutta poles are known for.
